The Hedge Church of Ghent Shaped the History of the Low Countries

The old abbey church of St-Bavo in Ghent has vanished. It was demolished by the Spanish in the 16th century, leaving behind an empty space. But then in 2006, the city gardens department planted tall, clipped hornbeam hedges to mark the outline of the vanished 12th-century church.

When the religious order at the Park Abbey near Leuven fell on hard times in the 1820s, it sold off a remarkable set of 17th-century stained-glass windows. Split up, passed on, sold and resold, many of the windows ended up in the USA. Now 21 of the 41 windows have been restored to the abbey's cloist
