Brussels does not belong to Belgium's past. Brussels will continue to play the role history has imposed on it for centuries. As a crossroads of peoples it will remain a focal point of constantly changing realms. Brussels decks itself in the tricolour, but has outgrown Belgian structures. It will outlive Belgium, precisely because it brings Belgian identity to life in a way nothing else can.
