In his Preface to this anthology of Dutch (and Flemish) poetry Coetzee refers insultingly to Holland's ‘paralysing deference' to cultural fashions from abroad and its lack of ‘boldness of thought'. He is plainly wrong. What's more, the proof is in his own anthology and translations. (J.M. Coetzee, Landscape with Rowers. Poetry from the Netherlands.
