Local elections in 2012 were proclaimed by the principal challenger of the Flemish Nationalist N-VA as a referendum on the federal government. The Christian Democrat CD&V remained the largest local party but the N-VA broke through in many cities. Its chairman Bart De Wever became the new mayor of Antwerp. Everyone is already looking to the important confrontation, ‘the mother of all elections' in 2014 when the regional, national and European parliaments will all be re-elected.
