‘Flanders still liveable in' was the headline in the Flemish daily De Morgen after the Belgian municipal elections (8 October 2006). So great was the euphoria following the very moderate election results of the extreme right party, Vlaams Belang, that the news headlines were seasoned with a strong dose of opinion.
