Video Poem: Perseverance by Lieke Marsman

Ons Erfdeel vzw and Poëziecentrum vzw asked nine youngsters from the Low Countries to create poetic films based on their favourite Dutch-language poem. Ester Bosschaert Devroe (b. 1999, Bever) made a film after the poem Vasthoudendheid (Perseverance) by Lieke Marsman, from the anthology Wat ik mezelf graag voorhoud, published by Van Oorschot in 2010. The video poetry project Moving Verses is made possible with the support of the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

Perseverance

There are many reasons for not being able to
keep still in bed, at night. A persistent cough,
for instance, will jolt your body up and down
as if you’re lying in a carriage and
if you’re very ill, a hearse. Or it’s as if
you don’t know where to look, because all
you see is red. Your eyes are so red, because
someone said your eyes are so blue and
that touched you. The great thing about being touched
is that it doesn’t have to last long to be long-lasting
and the strange thing about being touched
is that it goes on resounding and pounding and yet it
makes you still. The nice thing about the word still is that
it says something about sound and movement and the special
thing about sound is that it consists of movement. The great thing about movement is that it’s so restrained, you can
make your skin feel very gently that someone else
is feeling your skin. At the same time the great thing about movement is precisely that it’s exuberant,
you can have a very stubborn dancing monster in your feet, so
that you want to stamp heels into the ground the whole evening.
But the odd thing about a whole evening is that you sometimes
don’t know what kind of movement you’d prefer
to have last a long time. Fortunately, the good thing about having
something last a long time is that eventually
everything becomes still again.
And what I think is the nicest thing of all about the word still
is that when we’re still again, we can ask each other,
why we’re still not going to sleep.

Vasthoudendheid

kunt blijven liggen, ’s nachts.
