This week's Friday Verses are written by Bert Van Raemdonck. This poem was first published in Dutch in Het Liegend Konijn, a magazine for contemporary Dutch-language poetry.

He has written essays, critical articles and reviews on literature, music and culture in numerous magazines (like rekto: verso) and newspapers (like De Standaard). As a poet he has published in Het Liegend Konijn, Deus Ex Machina and Poëziekrant. His debut collection, Hier raken we mij kwijt (Here We Lose Me) was published in 2019 by Polis.

Water Damage & The Child’s Flippers

Since our arrival Wannes has not yet looked at Azra
but ever since we’ve been here Azra
has had eyes only for Wannes and his short green trousers
and the glow of his gold ring

And then inevitably the conversation turns to the moment
when we assess the children of our loins
and we move a thumb invisibly up or down

The important thing is to stress only the positive aspects of recent times
but no she can’t do that, she won’t do that, though I’ve said it a hundred times
and she mixes the facts with feelings she has about her own childhood
and before you know it she’s talked about that appointment with the shrink

That’s awful, says Fien
I really feel for you –
she’s a general who knows that this campaign
will be decided not with truth but with lies

We’ll stop here for a moment
we’ll simply stop time

We stoppen hier heel even
we stoppen nu gewoon de tijd
