United in Difference

In 1576, a historic peace treaty was signed: the Pacification of Ghent. The seventeen provinces of the Low Countries set aside their religious differences to jointly resist Spanish rule – for the first time as a political unity. In the themed dossier ‘United in Difference’, The Low Countries explores the cultural and historical legacy of this brief but significant episode. The values of the Pacification – freedom, tolerance, connectedness and diversity – remain surprisingly relevant today.
