Philips Galle: The Engraver Who Gave Up on Erasmus’s Dream

The engraver and print publisher Philips Galle was a central figure in the cultural and intellectual life of the Low Countries during the late sixteenth century. As religious and social tensions mounted, his work became increasingly conservative until, eventually, his humanist dream was replaced by a strictly Catholic stance.
