A Chocolate Oscar for Paula van der Oest

Even the consolation prizes got crushed in her handbag when Paula van der Oest went to Hollywood in 2003 hoping to collect an Oscar for her film ‘Zus & zo' (aka Hotel Paraiso). She had to make do with a Academy Award made of chocolate. The American film magazine ‘Variety', though, called this Dutch director the Woody Allen of Amsterdam. With her compassion for her leading characters and their eternal quest for that ever-elusive happiness, Van der Oest is beginning to trace a thematic line in her oeuvre.
