Flemish Master of the Small Canvas. In Praise of Willem Elsschot
(Paul Vincent) THE LOW COUNTRIES - 2016, № 24, PP. 78-83
Willem Elsschot’s (1882-1960) eleven novellas, with their irony, sardonic humour and stylistic sophistication, are as vibrant today as when they were written. In 2016, when the Low Countries will again be in focus as a Schwerpunkt at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the time would seem ripe to make the case for a Complete Willem Elsschot in English, either as an omnibus or as separate volumes. He is an undisputed classic in the Dutch-speaking world and in my view, given the right exposure, has the potential to become a European and world classic
