To Frerichs Nescio, who kept as quiet as possible about his writing, is essential a lyricist, a poet who writes prose. He's a romantic, too, and a cynic, and also a mystic in his own way. Like Chekhov and Turgenev, he is able to say complicated things with simple words. That for all that his work is so light and playful, so tender, moving and witty, is nothing short of miraculous.
