The Dutch United East India Company (VOC; Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) was founded on 20 March 1602. The VOC was a Dutch trading co-operative which, in a relatively short period of time, built up an empire of settlements and trade relations along the coasts of South and East Africa and in Asia.
