The car industry in Belgium has been going downhill for years, but the pace of decline has quickened markedly in recent years. Renault closed its plant in Vilvoorde in 1997. In 2006 the Volkswagen Vorst plant was subsumed into Audi Brussels. Opel closed down in Antwerp in 2010 and Ford decided in 2012 that its factory in Genk also had to close at the end of 2014. Only Volvo in Ghent remains. But for how long?
