The ‘Orpheus' here is Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, who left his mark on the musical life of the Northern Netherlands in the second half of the sixteenth century. He was the last major representative of the Dutch and Flemish polyphony which dominated and defined European music for two centuries.
