‘A strange calm after the storm' is how the author describes post-Catholic Flanders at the beginning of the 21st century. In fact, there never was a storm: even before the Second Vatican Council, a noiseless dechristianising had begun. It happened almost naturally, below the surface and without a great deal of fuss. The outward signs – church weddings and funerals - remain, but religious denominations are becoming ever smaller
