Hertmans started out as a poet but came to the attention of the general public as a novelist. He also wrote theatre texts and is now mainly active as an essayist. “Vital melancholy” or a fundamental discontent that preserves itself through an ever-present will to survive goes hand in hand with a growing involvement in public life. His latest essays condemn emotional sensationalism and the runaway hedonistic economy for which the media are responsible. With an extract from Intercities and two poems.
