Research carried out in recent years has shown that in the Middle Ages a considerable amount of glass was already being produced in the Low Countries, particularly in the southern, more wealthy part which today is Belgium. This article provides a short historical survey of glass production in the Netherlands, from the first glassworks to make glass ‘à la façon de Venise' in Middelburg in 1581 to the glassmaking course at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.
