The Salve of Humour
(Janet Koplos) The Low Countries - 1999, № 7, pp. 295-297
A personal view on Dutch contemporary art by Janet Koplos, senior editor of 'Art in America'. In 1992 she visited the Netherlands for the first time and was fascinated by the ways in which that art differed from New York art. She considers the humour in Dutch art to be a social salve meant to soothe differences and to make the artist less threatening; it always conceals deeper feelings and meanings.
