Much of what is considered ‘typically American’ has its roots in the Low Countries. From prison architecture, dance music and the electric tram to the entrepreneurial spirit, Calvinist ideas and cultural traditions: the Netherlands and Belgium have left their mark on the United States, both visibly and invisibly, positively and problematically.
