Maaike de Wolf: Stories

This week's Friday Verses are written by Maaike de Wolf. We translated Geschiedenissen (Stories). This poem was first published in Dutch in Het Liegend Konijn, a magazine for contemporary Dutch-language poetry.

Maaike de Wolf (Amsterdam, b. 1978) is a poet and writer of very short prose pieces. She studied at the School of Journalism and the Writers’ Professional College in Amsterdam and also works as a freelance web editor and text writer. Her poetry is published online and offline in various literary magazines, including De Gids, Hollands Maandblad and Het Liegend Konijn. In addition, she enjoys reading her work at literary venues and festivals.

Stories

In the distance I see the flags of the young on horse.
Obviously the young come on horseback,
thundering along
leaving dust clouds behind them.

Why not go with them
for someone who can bear the flag the journey’s
not that strange
perhaps my role in this harmony has meaning.

Underway with vintage leather gloves, I imagine
a black hat, for later when I’m that other person.
Books that weigh me down at the right moment.

What do these young things have that I didn’t have?
I had summers with water, woods, ices
boys who tied me to a post
and although it was just a game
the smell of that neighbourhood grew thicker
with the years.

We didn’t go to the beach – too far.
We didn’t go to a theme park – beneath us.
There was a granny with dolphins around,
open-mouthed
we watched the keepers with their long boots and buckets full of fish
ignorant of the dedication with which they rehearsed when we took our eye off them.

One of the horses carries a dirty secret.

I feel a stone in my shoe and long for a present
in which I’m grown up.

In which of my stories am I best off
or do I fit precisely into what awaits me?

I can tell a wood from a water pool
but I know little.

Geschiedenissen
